Babagana Zulum, Borno state governor has appointed Usman Aliyu as the director general of the Borno state agency for the Great Green Wall (GGW).
Abdurrahman Bundi, senior special assistant on new media to the governor, announced this in a statement on Monday.
The GGW is an African Union (AU) initiative aimed at combating desertification in the Sahel and halting the Sahara’s expansion by creating mosaic greenbelts in Nigeria’s northern drylands.
The initiative is part of a larger effort involving 22 African countries to rejuvenate communities across the continent.

Aliyu, a native of Hawul LGA, earned a B.Sc in geology from the University of Maiduguri in 2007 and a master’s in environmental management in 2015.
He served as coordinator for the now-defunct federal ministry of mineral resources and geological survey in Kano.
He has also worked with the Borno State Green Hub Africa and the Kano state ministry of environment.

Aliyu is currently pursuing a PhD in environmental management at the University of Maiduguri.
